Iceland From a geographical point of view Thingvellir ('parliament plain') is on a fracture due to continental drift. The American and Eurasian plates are clearly distinguishable and it is even possible to take a walk in the middle of the tectonic plates, in the canyon that takes the name of the Almannagjá fault.
