In architecture and sculpture, theinfluence of classical styles was powerful. Brunelleschi (1377-1446) built the Pitti Palace, and the famous Cathedral at Flor-ence. The great Michelangelo Buonarroti (1465-1564) was amaster of painting, sculpture, and architecture, and was a poetas well. As a sculptor, his work is seen to best advantage inthe statue of Moses at Home, and the sepulchers of Julianand Lorenzo de Medici at Florence. The Florentine artistGhiberti (1378-1455) exhibited the perfection of bas-reliefin the bronze gates of the Baptistery. In painting, Giotto had INVENTION AND DISCOVERY 373. Michelangelo been the greatest name in the earlier days of the fourteenthcentury. Raphael (1483-1520) is, except Michelangelo, thegreatest name in the history ofItalian art. Perhaps his mostcelebrated work is the Madonnadi San Sisto, which is now in theDresden Gallery. Fra Angelico(1387-1455), a devout monk, hadtransferred to canvas the ten-derness and fervor of his owngentle spirit. To the Venetian school be-longed, in the sixteenth century,Titian, who died in 1576, PaulVeronese, and Tintoretto. Leo-nardo da Vinci (1452-1519) andCorreggio (1494-1534) belongto the Lombard school. Cluido Reni and Salvator .Eosa weredisciples of the school of Bologna. In the Netherlands, a school of painting was formed underthe influence of the brothers Van Dyck (1366-1426, 1386-1440).
