Gothic architecture in France, England, and Italy . reatment of the foliage : but wefind something like it at Wells where the square abacusOakham is retained, and in the Castle Hall at Oakham (Fig. 79),a building which is exactly coeval with English Williamswork at Canterbury, and may perhaps have had the useof some of his workmen (Plate LXIV). It is one of themost interesting domestic buildings in England, and oneof the best examples of the transition from Romanesqueto Gothic. It consists of a nave with an aisle on bothsides divided by an arcade of four round arches of asingle order, carried by three pillars and a respondbracket at each end. On the abacus there is room onthe side next the nave for a little seated figure holding amusical instrument. The aisle windows are of two lightswith pointed arches outside, united on the inside under asingle round arch ornamented with the dog-tooth, andthe same ornament is used in the windows and thearcades. 1 There is an illustration of one of these in my Reason in Architecture,Plate II.
