A string of fifteen dead Whitetail Deer hung between two trees by an unseen party of hunters in northern Wisconsin woods, 1909. The Rhinelander Herald, a local newspaper wrote, "Next Thursday, Nov. 11th, is the first of the open season for deer. Notwithstanding the so-called protection, this fleet-footed animal, typical of the wild life of the great forests of the north, is rapidly thinning out and in another generation will have passed into history with the pines."
