The buying and merging of independent street railway proper-ties into larger centrally-controlled systems, which has been go-ing on so extensively all over the country, has been attended by adifficulty that in a number of cities has proved to be serious. Thishas been the selecting of suitable office rooms in which the workof the various executive, financial and operating departments ofthe consolidated system could be centralized and carried on to thebest advantage. With the idea of securing an arrangement of of-fices suited to their own particular requirements a number of streetrailway companies have found it advantageous to erect their own. NEW OFFICE BUILDING, UNITED TRACTION ALBANY. N. Y. office buildings which are used exclusively for transacting the of-fice work of the system. The United Traction Co., of Albany, N. Y., operating about ^^miles of track, has erected for this purpose a building which is ex-ceptionally elaborate and well arranged. The following descrip-tion and illustrations may prove suggestive to other companiesthat are preparing to engage new quarters. The building, which was completed in May, 1900, is on the cor-ner of Broadway and Columbia Sts., Albany, with a frontage of R*-r^-^-T-rf
