The Disko Island coal mining community of Qullissat, established in 1920 and abandoned in 1972 when mining operations became too costly, was heavily damaged by a tsunami in 2001. The huge wave crossed narrow Vaigat Sound when a mainland mountainside fell into the sea, Disko Island, Greenland.
