The maid of Saragossa known as Augustina (1786-1857) fought in defense of Spain during the Spanish War of Independence (1807-1814) - first as a civilian and then later as an officer in the army. She has been called the "Spanish Joan of Arc." In this painting by contemporary Scottish painter David Wilkie, she is showing firing a gun on French invaders at Zaragoza (also spelled Saragossa) in the region of Aragon in Spain.
