Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893), wearing the medal of the Legion of Honour. Jean-Martin Charcot was a French neurologist, and he is considered to be the founder of modern neurology. In 1862, he was appointed to Paris's Salpetriere hospital, later founding its famous neurological clinic. Charcot used observation and autopsies to identify several diseases of the nervous and muscular systems (Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and Charcot's disease are examples). This photograph, by Eugene Pirou (a Parisian photographer, active towards the end of the 19th century) is from the collection of the publisher Benjamin R. Tucker (1854-1939).
