Flocks of black-headed, black-breasted jaysscolded and chattered from trees along the roadways, and long-tailedgrackles, found in fiocks through the country, were seen glossy black males were called clarincros because of their curioussongs, while the brown females were known as saiiafcs in the beliefthat they were a different species. On the sides of the volcanoes above the cultivated fields were deepravines or steep slopes covered with a heavy deciduous forest in whoseundergrowth were many interesting birds.
