ARABIA. Early map showing "Debay" (Dubai). Graen/Kuwait. Muscat. ARROWSMITH 1828

Arabia. Artist/engraver/cartographer: A. Arrowsmith. Provenance: "Orbis Terrarum Veteribus Noti descriptio"; by A. Arrowsmith, Published by E. Williams, London. Type: Antique copperplate map with original outline colour. This is the earliest map we've come across on which Dubai is named (in this case spelled as "Debay"). The Al Fahidi Fort was built in approximately 1787, and the town itself is first recorded in 1799. By 1822 it was a town populated by some 700–800 members of the Bani Yas tribe; it was unlikely to have been much larger than that by the date of publication of this map (1828).
