The artificial mound of Hanai Te-peh, which gives its name to the site,is of remarkable interest. It forms,as it were, the nucleus of the oldsettlement, and stands out promi-nently in the plain at the end ofa long spur of land which reachesback to Akshi Kioi. My first excava-tion in this tepeh was made in 1857,and the results and hypothesis foundedthereon were published in tlie Jour-nal of the Archaeological Institute.^Further researches were made sub-sequently ; latterly with the powerfulassistance of Dr. Schliemann.
