This close-up picture of part of a purple sea pen (Virgularia gustaviana) shows its numerous polyps extended fully and feeding in the current. Sea pens are soft corals which are usually encountered on sandy bottoms at depths of more than 20 metres. Their common name is derived from the fact that they remind people of old-fashioned quill pens.
