Sampling quadrats of m^ ( ft^) were taken for assessing groM'th, mortality and spatial distri- bution of recruits. Recruits are clams that entered the fishery during a given year of study. Each m^ sample was screened in the field with standard sieves. Initially, 1-mm () mesh screens were used to retain young recruits and with their subsequent growth 2-mm () mesh screens were used. Following collection, the recruits were relaxed in isotonic MgClo, fixed in 10% formalin and preserved in 70% isopropyl alcohol. Study areas were sampled as frequently as tidal conditions allowed in 1970 and 1971.
