The old brick Powder Horn or Magazine stands op-posite the courthouse. It is of an octagonal design andhas stood well the wear and tear of time, since GovernorSpottswood built it in 1714. During the RevolutionaryWar Lord Dunmore removed the amunition from thePowder Horn and stored it on board his man-of-war. Thepeople, headed by Patrick Henry, arose en masse to re- sist the indignity, when Lord Dnnmore reimbursed thetreasury for the POWDKIi HOKX. The Palace was the executive mansion. It wasburned during the Revolution. A stone monument marksthe historical spot, it is now utilized for a school building. A stone monument has been erected by the Associationfor the preservation of Virginia Anticjuities, on the siteof the old House of Burgesses, which long ago was de-stroyed bv fire.
