Artery and vein, post mortem. Arteries deliver oxygenated blood to all tissues of the body. This artery (left) has deposits of fatty material (yellow) on its inner walls, a condition known as atheroma. Veins (right) carry deoxygenated blood and waste away from the tissues to the lungs. Post-mortem examinations, also known as autopsies, are carried out to identify a cause of death, and to assess the health of a dead person's organs.
