Food testing satire. 19th-century satirical cover artwork titled 'Look before you eat', on the subject of food adulteration. Adulterated food is where non-food materials are added to increase the bulk or weight, sometimes with a decrease in food safety or quality. The man standing at a dining room table is using a 'Milk Tester' with 'High Water Mark', a 'Sand Extractor' over a sugar bowl, and a 'Butter Tester', as well as a microscope and a retort. He has a book titled 'Chemistry' in his coat pocket. This chromolithograph, by Frederick Burr Opper (1857-1937), is part of the cover for the 12 March 1884 issue of the humour magazine 'Puck', published in New York, USA.
