Tugboat pushing barges to pass through the channel at Lock and Dam #11 on the Mississippi River. A series of dams such as this one are utilized up and down the river. River barge traffic uses a channel along the Iowa shoreline to negotiate past the dam. The dam spans the states of Iowa and Wisconsin (top of image). In total there are 29 dams/locks on the mighty Mississippi River.
