But it was also found that vellum leaves wereapt to curl strongly, and to counteract this tendency strongwooden boards were put on each side. The loose ends of thebands were fastened to the boards, which hinged upon them,and the protecting strip of leather at the back was drawn overthe boards far enough to cover the hinge.
