Hethen went to the continent for post graduate courses andspent some time in study at Gottingen and his return to Edinburgh he was awarded the Mac-kenzie Scholarship for eminence in Classical Literature, andlater he gained an open scholarship at Corpus ChristiCollege, Oxford. Subsequently, he won the coveted Fergu-son Scholarship competed for by candidates from all theScottish LIniversities. His course at Oxford, where he thenfollowed post graduate study in Classics, was one of greatdistinction, and he graduated with high honours to beginhis active educational SIR WILLIAM PETERSON On leaving Oxford he was appointed Assistant to theProfessor of the Humanities in Edinburgh llni\-ersity, al)ost which he held for o^?er two years. In 1882, upon theinauguration of Lhiiversity College, Dundee, he was ap-pointed to the PrincipalshiiJ and to the chair of Classicsand Ancient History. He held this jiosition for thirteenyears. His task here was extremely difficult because of thepeculiar educational situation and because of the efforts toeffect the afiiliation of Lnixersity College with St. AndrewsLnivensity. In this latter endea\our he took a very prom-inent part. His work at Dundeewas unusually successful and hebecame widely known as a bril-liant scholar, a capable teacherand an administrator of greatabilitv and foresight. In 1895 Sir William Dawson,Principal of McGill, retired be-cause of advancing years andfailing health.
