To Light tlie Point.—Hold the platinum part in the yellow alcohol flame until it showsa slight cherry red heat, then press the bulb very gently and slowly, blowing very little gas intothe point; if the heat then increases, the burner is lighted and the bulb should be graduallypressed more frequently, until the desired heat is obtained. If the heat should not increase, butdie out when the bulb is pressed, it is a sign that the platinum is not hot enough to light the gas; all pressure on the bulbshould then in this casecease until the point beginsto glow again with a slightred heat. Then the bulbshould be pressed verycautiously and gently untilthe burner is as hot as re-quired, when it can be takenout of the alcohol flame,and by pressure on the bulb,will retain its heat as longas required. If the heatshould get too low on theburner, hold it in the flameagain, pressing the bulb asbefore until it shows theheat required before taking away from the flame. Should it
