Taking the lines in his right hand, and managing Dukewith the left, he half-hitched the lines about the pommel of hissaddle. By slackening Dukes pace he brought heavy pressure onthe lines. But he was afraid he would break the leather andwas careful. He made them taut, however, and began to turnthe team from the road into the field through which it ran.
