Hiroshima and environs. Infrared satellite image of Hiroshima (at centre), Japan, & the surrounding area. North is at top. In the infrared range green vegetation is red, buildings are light blue, clouds are white and water is black. Hiroshima stands on the island of Honshu; the island of Shikoku appears at bottom right. The city of Fukuyama is at far right. Hiroshima is a major manufacturing centre. The mountainous area around the city has fertile valleys where rice, wheat and silk are produced.
