We illustrate by half-tone and line en-gravings an extremely heavy and power-ful locomotive recently built at the RogersLocomotive Works, Paterson, N. J., forthe Illinois Central Railroad, to be usedon one of the divisions south of the Ohioriver, where the grades are somewhatheavier than on the divisions connectingwith it. The engine is intended to haul trains ofa maximum weight of 2,000 tons overgrades of 38 feet to the mile. This willbe easily within the capacity of the en-gine, which has a traction power of about50,000 pounds.
