They were followed in later centuries by a andDonanssecond race of conquerors called the Dorians who seem to havedriven the Achaeans before them out into the islands of the ^geanand even into Asia Minor beyond. This period of Greek history is, however, very vague. Eventhe dates are by no means certain. All that we know is thatwhen written records begin, the Greeks were living on the main-land and in the islands and on the coast of Asia Minor across the^gean THE CITY STATE 39 In both Egypt and Babylonia, you remember, the countrywas originally divided into numerous small provinces each ofwhich acknowledged some tribal leader or king as its chief. The cityLater these provinces were united into one nation under a ^*^*®single king. In Greece, owing to the character of the country,the people were never united. From the beginning to the end ofGreek history, the country was divided into a number of districtsnot much larger than the average county in the United each of these divisions, there were two or three cities, and eachcity had its own independent government. In some cities amajority of the people were active citizens; in others a tribal kingand his nobles controlled the citys affairs. From time to time,one or another city conquered its neighbors, but the conquestwas never permanent, and the story of Greece is therefore thestory of the development of these city states.
