If the cutting is made towards the rise of thebeds, , at A, Fig. 53a, there can be no possible danger of slips;but if the road be placed at B, Fig. 53a, the side of the cuttingwill be a source of continual trouble and expense. Not only inhillside cuttings, however, but also in other cases the dip of thestrata must be taken into consideration before a proper estimatecan be formed of the expense which will be incurred. In Fig. 53bit is obviotis that if the dip of the strata is greater than the angleof repose, that side of the cutting which is towards the rise of the 484 HIGHWAY CONSTEUCTIOH. beds will need to be benched back until the slope of the cutting isless than the angle of repose of the strata. This, of course, involvesan increased expense in excavation, which should be taken intoconsideration when weighing the advantages and disadvantages ofcertain lines of route. CHAPTER
