Latakia, Syria, Ikonos satellite image. Latakia is Syria's main port, situated on the Mediterranean coast. It is a modern town, having expanded rapidly after being fitted with a modern harbour 20 years ago. However, the history of the town goes back to the second millenium BC when it was part of a Syro-Phoenician kingdom. Photographed on 26 January 2001.
