Yttrium Oxide Crystals

These are yttrium oxide crystals, activated using a special technique called atomic layer deposition to make them luminescent (glowing). Luminescent materials are crucial for energy-efficient lighting. Each crystal is smaller than the diameter of a single strand of spider silk. Yttrium oxide, also known as yttria, is Y2O3. It is an air-stable, white solid substance. Yttrium oxide is used as a common starting material for both materials science as well as inorganic compounds. Yttrium compounds are used in superconductors and lasers. A crystal or crystalline solid is a solid material whose constituents, such as atoms, molecules or ions, are arranged in a highly ordered microscopic structure, forming a crystal lattice that extends in all directions.
