A ready reference and reservoir of useful information More than two hundred illustrations . on the opposite side, and one upright piece midway betweenthe ends. This latter is far preferable to putting on a diagonal brace on thatside. In such a gate there is no mortising, and, for the weight of it, it is farstronger than any mortised gate that can be made. To Hang: a Gate.—After the halves of the hinges belonging to the gateare put into the posts, set the gate in place and support it just as you wish itwhen hung. Now mark the places for the hinges on the gate rail, and bore theholes. The upper hinge have long enough, so that the nut may be loosened tolower the front, or screwed up to raise it at anv time when the latch does notwork well. Put a bolt above and below the spot where the hinge goes throughthe gate scantling, to prevent the hinge splitting the piece. Cheap Gate Fastener.— After trying all sorts of simple and compli-cated gate fasteners, I have never found one so satisfactory as the simple boardshde, made as represented in the drawing. 70 CONSTRUCTION OF CHEAP SAFETY LATCH. A cleat is nailed each side of the front, or latch end of the gate, and twoshort ones a few inches back each side, then a little strip of board slides be-tween these, resting- upon the fence board. A hole is bored through the slide and a short pin put in. A longslot is mortised in the post to re-ceive the slide latch. There areseveral advantages in this arrange-ment ; it is cheap and simple, and ifthe gate sags, or the post is movedby the frost, it will not interfere withthe fastening. Again, if any animallifts the gate, the latch goes up withthe gate in the slot, but the gate isnot unfastened. If the gate opens but one way, ajamb casing may be nailed on thepost to stop the gate. The cleats on the gate should be just far enough fromthe facing board to give proper play to the slide, so the pin will strikethe cleats
