The Restoration of the Ancient Parts at Headstone Manor, Harrow, Middlesex
Restored aisled Great Hall from West showing new seasoned oak panelling and seat. The room forms part of the building built circa 1310 and a stairway to the landing can be seen in the corner. Headstone Manor is a timber framed Grade 1 listed14c manor house of outstanding importance. Now part of Harrow Museum. Within the fabric of the building are first class examples of high quality work from 14th, 17th and 18th centuries. Together with a barn and a complete moat with water, one of the most interesting buildings in the whole country and an ancient monument. The restoration underway in 2006 involves repairs to the oldest part of the manor house with the fabric of the building now structurally sound and weatherproof. Stabilisation from subsidence together with the preservation of a great amount of the timber frame of the ancient hall, roofs and crosswing was done by inserting a special steel secondary support structure. The design this innovative support prevents possible injury to the historic fabric and timber caused by the steelwork biting in. The history dates back to at least 1233 when it was owned by a family called de la Hegge. In 1546 it was surrendered to King Henry VIII during the Reformation. The house was a working farm until the 1920s and was originally called Hegton or Heggeton which turned into the modern name of Headstone. Repair not replace. Retain maximum amount of historic fabric. Find a use that fits the building rather than do unnecessary work to fit the building to new use. Alterations, new materials should be identifiable but compatible with the character and historic fabric of the building. redecoration; redecorated; open up; revealed; reveal; stone floor; rotten; seasoned oak; natural; makegood; renewal; renewing; batterns; joists; supports; roughcast render; coatings; limewash; wattle and daub; plaster; plastered; joinery; visitors; tourists; guided tours, interior, vertical, architecture
