Red-breasted Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus ruber), Sacramento County California

Sapsuckers are a type of woodpecker that drill small sap wells in the bark of trees and eat the sap that oozes out as well as the insects attracted to the sap. The sap wells are also a source of food for other bird species. This species of sapsucker is migratory and in California the bird winters in the lowlands and breeds in the nearby Sierra Nevada. Sap wells are visible in the upper right portion of this photograph.
