Report on the cost of living in New Zealand, 1891-1914, being an inquiry into the course of retail prices during the period 1891-1914; with monthly tables showing increases during war period--July, 1914, to August, 1915 . The third subgroup in groceries, Ic, consists of the one commodity, sugar; and here again a great increase of price is evident, amounting on theaverage to about 33 per cent. In each of the four centres prices rose almost immediately after the war,and increased rapidly till December and more slowly thereafter. In Christchurchprices were at a higher level when war broke out, and this is responsible forthe low figure of increase shown in that town, although prices are higher therethan in the other three towns. The greatest increase has been in Wellington. In order to give a graphical illustration of the course of prices of thegroceries group, the following graph has been prepared showing each sub-group, bread, and the whole group. It must be emphasized that each graphhas a different base : 1,000 means a different expenditure in each case : thatthe relative increases, not the relative levels, are intended to be compared.
