External targeting pods such as the Litening III have revolutionised air to ground warfare by giving aircraft the ability to attack targets with precision, increasing the likelihood of target destruction and minimizing collateral damage. Targeting pods can contain a camera and forward-looking infrared sensor to enable the aircrew to identify targets. Images from the pod would be displayed on screens inside the aircraft. Pods can also contain a laser designator which directs a laser beam at the target so that laser-guided bombs or missiles launched by the aircraft can home in on it.
