The annual September exhibition of the Rhode Island Horticultural Society was held in the ballroom of the Nar- ragansett hotel, Providence, September 18 and 19, and was as fine as any the society has ever held. Dahlias were the great feature and were extensively shown and the quality of all exhibits was superb. W. D. Hathaway, of New Bedford, captured first for 100 varieties of dahlias, including all types. Miss Nellie J. Gilson was a good second and John E. Howe, Providence, E, I., third. Other large exhibitors of dahlias were: C. Louis Ailing, West Haven, Conn.; Arthur Sellar, William Steele, Auburn, E. I.; William Sweeney, Willimantic, Conn., and Joseph Nolet, New Bedford, Mass. The last named showed some superb flowers, including seedlings of exceptional quality. A. T. Leuzon, South Attleboro, Mass., won the silver medal offered by the American Gladiolus Society for fifteen named gladioli, three spikes of each. T. .1. Johnston & Co. showed an excellent group of palms and ferns and had charming baskets of gladioli, dahlias and other seasonable flowers. O. P. Chapman, Jr., Westerly, K. I., had a fine dahlia display, including some artis- tically arranged baskets. J. E. Howe, Providence, had an excellent group of hardy herbaceous flowers. Fruits and vegetables were of excel- lent quality, and nearly all of the 224 classes in the schedule were competed for. The attendance was excellent and the interest shown in dahlias was quite pro- nounced. W. N. Craig, Brookline, Mass., acted as judge. W. N. Save Time and Plants by uslns THE HARRIS RE
