Therewas a continual slow settlement of this wall as itsconstruction progressed. It was brought to aheight of 61 feet above sea level through its entirelength in order that the settlement might extendover the whole base before any part was broughtto full height. The north guide and flare walls are yet to bebuilt. It will be necessary to go to a depth of about70 feet below sea level through very soft materialin order to uncover the rock on which to build theflare walls. Under the guide wall itself the rock isat a still lower elevatipn, and a pilefoundation will probably be con-structed, the piling going to material in this space was toosoft to hold up steam
