ATS RECRUITING CORPORALS OF NORTHERN COMMAND - Sergeant Harrisson (see ) talks to Private Grayson of "E" Branch, Northern Command, who prior to joining the ATS in June 1940 was engaged in illustrating engineering books, previous to which she was training at the Sheffield College of Art. Upon hearing that the ATS were needing recruits for Specialised Jobs, Miss Grayson decided to join and was first sent to a Training Centre for 3 weeks, where she spent most instructive and enjoyable times. Later, she was posted to her present work, which is of a purely technical nature, dealing with architectural work and general machinery, such as Electric Lighting, Central Heating and Hot and Cold Water Systems in connection with various camps. Miss Grayson (now Private of course) does work which involves travelling to different parts of the Command, and this she finds very instructive interesting and helpful. So far as her future civilian life is concerned she now has the tremendous advantage of Machinery and Architectural work which otherwise she should probably have missed had she not joined the ATS. Her hours of work are not long or tedious and she also has time off for pastimes, such as Hockey, Tennis, Badminton, etc., which gives the members of her Company the opportunity of meeting each other and forming friendships, which Miss Grayson finds to be educational in many instances British Army
