Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) on ice, Svalbard, Norway

Polar Bears (Ursus maritimus) are threatened with extinction due to global warming reducing the pack ice in the Arctic. They are powerful predators, feeding mainly on seals. They hibernate during the colder months of the year, and the female gives birth to its (tiny) young in early Spring, in its den under the snow. This species is probably the most symbolic victim of the global warming phenomenon, which is a danger to several species and to entire ecosystems globally.
