Sow in April, in drills 1 foot apart; when 3 or 4 inches high, thin out in the rows to 10 inches apart, and transplant the ensuing autumn or spring to any desired situation, in a deep, rich soil. The ground must be dug and heavily manured, at least 2 feet deep. Set out the roots 3 feet apart each way, and the follow- ing spring it will be fit for use. In the fall the bed should have a thick dressing of coarse manure, which is to be dug into the ground in the spring.
