Ancient Greek gold coin hoard offering, sanctuary of Artemis, Epidaurus, circa 3rd cent BC. Napflion Archaeological Museum. Against white background. Photographer Paul E Williams. The gold coin hoard excavated from the secondary building of the sanctuary of Artemis consists of 92 gold starters of Phillip II, Alexander III, Phillip III Arhidaeus Seleucus I and Demetrius Policretes. The presence of hoards inside the sanctuary is indicative of both the importance of coin offering to the gods and the function of sanctuaries as banks.
