Passenger pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius), artwork. Before its extinction this bird was found throughout North America east of the Rocky Mountains in huge numbers. It was probably the most abundant bird on the planet, with population estimates during the 19th century at 5 billion individuals. By the end of 1900 it was extinct in the wild, partly due to habitat destruction and other factors, but mainly due to over hunting.
