Site of the abandoned and sealed off Eastern Portal (tunnel) of the Denver South Park and Pacific Railroad.

The Denver South Park and Pacific railroad trail leads to the now sealed of eastern portal of the Grand Alpine Tunnel. The trail follows the old railway grade. The tunnel, 1805 feet long, was opened in 1882 and closed in 1910. Its construction was plagued with problems. The harsh winters made work very difficult. The tunnel advanced only a 2 -3 feet per day. The workers were paid the then high wage of $3 per day to reflect the hard and dangerous nature of the job. From 1889 the tunnel was closed for 4 years due to a rockfall. Little remains at the site today to indicate where the tunnel once went but a stream flows from the rocks filling the old entrance perhaps indicating the difficult nature of constructing and keeping the tunnel open.
