Thames Barrier at dusk. Opened in 1984, this flood barrier was built between Newham and Greenwich, across the Woolwich Reach section of the River Thames, London, UK. It took eight years to complete. The barrier consists of ten moveable D-shaped gates supported by nine concrete piers, each containing the hydraulic machinery which lifts the gates into position. When not in use, the gates rest in concrete sills on the bed of the river, causing no hindrance to river traffic. This view is from the southern bank, of the western side of the barrier.
