We crossed a clear rivulet, and on the tree trunksthrown across it grew tree ferns with their slim blackstalks and bright green fronds, truly the most charm-ing sight in the whole jungle. In one place we tra-versed a narrow ridge, with deep ravines on eachside. The forest gradually changed, and the beautifultrees gave place to gnarled varieties \^ith wide tops;in the undergrowi;h the bushes became fewer, andwere mingled with flowering plants w4th soft herba-ceous stems. We had reached the home of the acan-thaciae, of which one specially beautiful variety withcrimson blossoms might at a little distance be mistakenfor a rhododendron. We chmbed slowly upwards in a dripping fog,. 203. Pasture region of the peak with a secondary crater to the northof the main summit.
