The site of a castle since the Middle Ages, this latest Kalkum Schloss incarnation is a stunning 400 year old baroque castle, sadly in need of some repair. Thankfully work has recently begun to restore the castle to its former glory. A square, fully moated structure, sitting in approximately 19 hectares of once beautifully manicured gardens. On three sides (North, South and West) the castle has gated entrances, which can be accessed by bridges which cross the moat. The East side has neither gate, nor bridge, and its facade is made solely of dark brick. The other three are mainly rendered and painted pink. Though the gardens are open to the public, access to the inner court yard is incredibly rare. The West gate is visible from Kalkumer Schloss Allee, the main road to nearby Kaiserswerth. Despite its condition, the castle grounds are still rightfully very popular with locals and tourists alike. The image shows the sun-kissed West face of the castle and its bridge, both beautifully reflected in the moat.
