Five month old foetus. View of a five month (20 week) old male foetus. The umbilical cord (white), which carries oxygen and nutrients from the placenta, is at upper right. By this time the foetus appears completely human, with fully developed lips, eyelids, eyebrows, external ears, fingers and toes. There is not much subcutaneous fat on the limbs or face, and the weight of the foetus by the end of the 5th month is still less than 500 grams. Fine hair called lanugo is seen. The head, still disproportionately large, grows more slowly than the body during this stage. Foetal movements can now usually be felt. This foetus has a crown-rump length of about 19 cm.
