A Maroon, one of many slaves who escaped the brutality of their Dutch plantation masters in Suriname during the late 18th century. Their resistance against their former masters came to be known as the Boni-Maroon War, 1765 to 1793. The picture may represent the freedom fighter Bokilifu Boni c. 1730 - 1793, who led the resistance. After an 18th century work by John Stedman.
