Heart ultrasound scan. Nurse using an echocardiograph machine to study a patient's heart. This technique uses ultrasound to detect the heart's structure. High frequency sounds waves are sent out and received by a transducer placed on the patient's chest. The differential reflection of the sound waves by the heart provides an echo map that can be used to diagnose defects such as congenital heart disease.
