Mr. Nelson Sizer, one of the gallery ushers of HenryWard Beechers church in Brooklyn, told a friend thatabout the time of the Cooper Institute speech, Mr. Lin-coln was twice present at the morning services of thatchurch. On the first occasion he was accompanied byhis friend, George B. Lincoln, Esq., and occupied aprominent seat in the center of the house. On a subse-quent Sunday morning, not long afterwards, the churchwas packed, as usual, and the services had proceeded tothe announcement of the text, when the gallery door atthe right of the organ-loft opened, and the tall figure of [243] 244 Lincolns stories and speeches. Mr. Lincoln entered, alone. Again in the city over Sun-day, he started out by himself to find the church, whichhe reached considerably behind time.
