19th-century illustration of a portrait of Sir Isaac Newton, English physicist, mathematician, astronomer, natural philosopher, alchemist, and theologian. Newton showed that the motions of objects on Earth and of celestial bodies are governed by the same set of natural laws by demonstrating his theory of gravitation. Newton was born on January 4, 1643 in Woolsthorpe-by-Colsterworth, Lincolnshire, England and died on March 31, 1727 in Kensington, Middlesex, England. Engraving published in Bilder-Atlas zur Weltgeschichte nach Kunstwerken alter und neuer Zeit (Stuttgart, Verlag Paul Neff, 1882).
