Vintage portrait photo circa 1920 of American actor, comedian, director and screenwriter Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle (1887 - 1933). Arbuckle was one of the most popular and highest paid silent film stars of the 1910s but his career was virtually destroyed by scandal at the peak of his fame. In 1921 an actress named Virginia Rappe became ill at a party thrown by Arbuckle and later died. Arbuckle was subsequently accused of raping her and causing fatal injuries and was charged with her manslaughter. He was ultimately acquitted by a jury after three high-profile trials but his career was ruined and it was only shortly before his death that he began to enjoy a comeback.
