During this time Mr. Clapp had formed an associationwith Park, Brother & Company, owning and controllingthe Black Diamond Steel Works, a firm that had beenidentified with the steel industry for many years. FromJuly 10, 1873, to Feb. 25, 1884, Mr. Clapp was a part-ner in the firm, and when, on the latter date, a limitedpartnership association, Park, Brother & Company,Limited, was formed, Mr. Clapp was elected secretaryand treasurer. He continued the incumbent of theseoffices after the incorporation of the business as the. BIOGRAPHICAL 37 Park Steel Company, March 6, 1899, until the ParkSteel Company was sold to the Crucible Steel Com-pany of America, July 16, 1900. After the completionof his work in connection with this transfer Mr. Clappretired from business, with the exception of suchactivity as was required in the conduct of his privateinterests, which he has attended to from his office inthe Park building. The years have exacted a toll ofstrength and vitality from Mr. Clapp, but their touchhas been gentle, and at an age that is granted to few hehas remained in close touch with affairs and has capablydirected the disposition of his extensive personal inter-ests. He has seen Pittsburgh come into her rightfulposition of industrial regnancy, and worked tirelesslyin the development of a unit in the steel industry, herbasic claim to greatness.
